Smoke Detector Safety Program PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 27 February 2009

Sunday, March 8th is almost here and that means its time to change your clocks and your smoke detector batteries. This is also a good time to review your family’s fire escape Imageplan and to test your children’s reaction to smoke detectors. Smoke detectors save lives, but only if they are installed properly and are operational. To that end, the management and firefighters of the Cottleville Fire District have partnered on a smoke detector program. Beginning this Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 28th and March 1st, on duty firefighters will begin going door to door in an effort to provide further education about smoke detectors as well as offering to check the functionality

of your detectors. They will go door to door the weekend of March 7th and 8th as well. Our fire district encompasses 38 square miles so we will not be able to get to every neighborhood. If we do not make it to yours this time around, or we miss you, please feel free to contact the fire district at 636-441-8799 to set an appointment or visit our web-site for further information. There are a few simple items you should remember when it comes to maintaining your detectors:
  1. Replace batteries twice a year.
  2. Newer smoke detectors are hardwired to your homes electrical circuitry, but they still have batteries as a back-up that must be replaced.
  3. Carefully use a vacuum to clean dust from the air vents of your detectors.
  4. Smoke detectors must be replaced every 10 years according to manufacturer recommendations.
  5. At a minimum, smoke detectors should be installed outside each sleeping area and on each floor of your home.
