Line of Duty Death |
|
Saturday, 26 July 2008 |
|
It is with great sadness that we announce a line of duty death from Maplewood Fire Department in St. Louis County. At approximately 0545 on Monday, July 21, 2008 Brother Ryan Hummert was fatally shot while exiting the fire truck to extinguish a car fire that had apparently been intentionally set to draw first responders to the scene. The gunman barricaded himself in an adjacent residence where he waited to ambush Fire Fighters and Police Officers as they arrived. Two Maplewood Police Officers were also shot, but expected to recover from their injuries.
Soon after learning of this terrible tragedy, Cottleville Firefighters lowered the flags and put up bunting over the engine bay doors at the four Cottleville firehouses. Cottleville also took part in the funeral procession that took place Friday. Four off-duty firefighters took the reserve pumper to Maplewood to help honor our fallen brother. Firefighter Reid Roberts, who took part in the procession stated,"It was amazing. The procession line was several miles long."
Ryan was 22 yea rs old and was weeks away from completing his first year as a full time Fire Fighter Paramedic with the Maplewood Fire Department. Ryan was a tremendous person who was extremely well-liked by everyone who knew him. His life’s ambition was to become a Fire Fighter and to serve the community in which he had been raised. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Hummert family and the members of the Maplewood Fire Department during these horrible times.
